MessageI am 50 years old and a diehard Richie Allen fan. I am a Phillies fan and saw several games at Connie Mack stadium. I can remember going to a game with my aunt and uncle when I was 12 years old. We drove to Harrisburg,PA (a 60 mile drive from my hometown), then took the train to Connie Mack. The train stopped right at the stadium. I remember walking across the railroad tracks to get to the stadium. I was so happy I got Johnny Briggs autograph that day. I graduated high school in 1974 and our senior class trip was to NYC. The highlight of our trip was to see the broadway play Grease. I and 5 of my friends decided to go to the White Sox - Yankees game which was being played in Shea Stadium because Yankee stadium was being remodeled that year. We met in my hotel room and waited till the class went to supper. The advisors had 6 meal tickets left over and couldn't figure out who was missing . We hopped the subway and went the whole way across NYC to Shea Stadium. The reason - Richie Allen was playing for the Chicago White Sox! The White Sox won the game 3-2 in 10 innings. We returned to the hotel at 12:00 am. When the elevator door opened up on my floor, there were the class advisors sitting on chairs in the hallway. They informed us they were sending us home at 7:00am. The next morning, they took us to the bus station and sent us home by bus to Williamsport,PA. Took 7 hours-a freight run too. It was worth every minute. We got to see Richie Allen play. I would do it again in a min

MessageAllen was one of my favorite players of all time! I remember as a young boy going to a game at Shea which somehow I recall being a twin night double header and Allen was with the Phillies duriong one of the games he hit the light tower in left centerfield a monster of a homerun!!!!!! I wonder if any one could posssibly verify this with the date.
Thank You,
JT

MessageOne of my favorite ballplayers. No doubt, a HOF'er. I saw my first MLB game in 1970 @ Busch, and watched him and Torre and Julian Javier on those Cardinals. Maybe one day, the Veterans Committee will vote him in.

MessageI neglected to post my e-mail if anyone wants to reach me to talk about the 1964 Phillies. It is spdicht@aol.com. I was 10 years old at the time and the memories are still vivid, as if it were yesterday. Please contact me.

MessageGreat site. I had a chance to meet Richie Allen at the Johnny Callison memorial. He was a class act, very gracious, very approachable and had a terrific sense of humor. It was great to see him come out to honor my favorite player Callison.
I am working on a book about the 64 Phillies and would love to speak with anyone about this.

Steve

MessageLived in NW Indiana in 1972, was 14 years old, I don't know if there was ever a better summer. Old #15 carried the whole franchise on his back, if that summer had not happened there probably wouldn't be a ChiSox today.

MessageThank you, Thank you, Thank you! Mr. Allen is my favorite player of all time. He is the reason I will only wear number 15 in any sport. As a 10 year old kid living in the Chicago area and getting the incredible gift of seeing Mr. Allen play in his 1972 AL MVP season, Mr. Allen made an incredible impact on me. I have told my children stories about Mr. Allen. How he hit 2 inside the park homeruns in consecutive at bats. How Sox manager Chuck Tanner told Harry Caray he would bring Allen in the bottom of the 9th in one game to hit the game winning homerun...and HE DID! To me at that age, Mr. Allen was THE MAN! Thanks for this site, the pics and all your effort. I know it is a labor of love. smilie
