| Message | I am here again to share with you some stories about GROWING UP IN TARLAC. I still remember during the early 70's, basketball was the popular sports of every young kids in Tarlac. There was a Inter-Barangay Basketball tournament held in our plazuela. This was headed by Mr. Soliman of Matatalaib. The teams that competed were Ligtasan, Poblacion, Sto. Cristo,Mabini Matatalaib,San Sebastian,San Nicolas, and San Vicente. The notables of the Senior Ligtasan team( as I remember)were the Soliman brothers( Totoy & Bert), Al Fernandez (now the Commissioner of Immigration), Daus brothers (Dong and Fred who is a successful doctor in Long Beach NY), Peping Villaroman,Esting San Diego,Mr.Mariano, Mr. Reyes ( former barangay captain of Ligtasan and Vey Dytuco We also have the Junior team composed of Oscar Pare,Titus Villaroman Lopez ( Canada based),the late Pol David, Boy David and Benjie Buan to name a few. There was a fierced competition between the Ligtasan, Mabini and Sto. Cristo teams every year. And to add was the excitement of watching some of the finest ball players of Tarlac. Those were the years that we had some memorable time spent during our youth. The plazuela was the place to be seen, when URDU opened up during the 70's a new breed of youngster had made the place their hang-out. The craze then was being in a band, I still remember that Lito Urquico started to form the Urdu Boys Band. What a decade of music and laughter. |
