MessageI wholeheartedly support the work of Ann Seidl and her team, and their efforts to understand and improve the media-created image of librarians. This documentary can be a valuable recruitment tool for all of us concerned about recruiting the next generation of librarians.

MessageI was surprised and delighted by Ann's presentation of her film project at the 2005 Innovative Users Group meeting. I'd had no idea what to expect in advance, but was won over by her enthusiasm, professionalism, and the quality of the work. I can't wait to see the finished results - and bring my paying friends with me smilie

MessagePart 2 of 2 (mercifully brief)
And if I might conclude with some crass commercialism, librarians spend money on media products. Lots of money, for ourselves and our professional collections. Information educators have budgets to disperse and curricula to innovate. A pioneering project such as The Hollywood Librarian seems destined to succeed where a hungry market is already in place.

Ann, there is no doubt in my mind that you will succeed one way or the other with this project because you are giving it your physical and monetary all. I trust you'll find backers willing to invest in your foresight.

MessagePart 1 of 2
Librarians in cinema are as varied as they are in real life--not nearly as many follow the stereotype as librarians think they do--but it's about time our profession was drawn into the conscious societal mind in order to attract acknowledgement for the great job we do and the impact we have. A project such as The Hollywood Librarian will stimulate discussion. I hope one result will be that we admit there have been lots of positive librarian portrayals going back to the earliest black & white celluloids. As to the more unflattering aspects of the icon...if they aren't hurting us, let's laugh them off. If they ARE hurting us, then by all means let's work on correcting cultural misconceptions. In any case it's fun to winnow out library settings and librarian roles in films if for no other reason than to validate all those academics who insist we librarians are obsessed by our images. A project such as The Hollywood Librarian serves as a starting block for examining our professional identities (how we see ourselves), our professional images (how we THINK others see us), and the reality of how we really ARE seen in the public eye. Films are rich fodder for interpretations. My concern is that librarians as we know and love them will be lost in the race to drop the L word as our job descriptions expand beyond the physical stacks. What would be worse than inaccurate portrayals of librarians in films would be no portrayals at all! (Continued)
