MessageNice find! I ran across your site searching "pittsylvania county grist mills". The reason for my search was,I heard there used to be an old mill on part of my property i just bought.Reading on i discovered "Herman Meltons" books on the subject and wonder if he mentions this one at all. Supposedly a Mr. Watts operated the mill last. "Melton" mentioned a babtist preacher named "Samuel Harris" ithink ,,who owned a plantation or two in this area on "Falls Creek". Thats where i am ,actually the first house on the creek as it develops just north of me past the :old rock quarry: off 360 or Old Richmond Road, SR 723,Old Quarry rd. and dumps into The DAN RIVER at the city farm area. I am interested in restoring the dam for hydroelectric for my home and for asthetics since i love waterwheels. PS Im in the round house and you can see it on the satelite pictures.

Messagesmilie Great website. It made for interesting read about my family history. I grew up in Martinsville and made many trips to Danville. The next time that I am down, I will try and stop by the mill.

MessageWonderful web sight, saw it in the Pittsylvania Packet, am impressed by the wonderful work you have done. Perfect pictures on your work and also on the other sights you have for us to see. I have ancestors that lived on Mill Creek and Whitehorn Creek, northeast of Chatham,Va. John & Mildred Payne, 1762.
Keep up the wonderful work you have done, any of the history that can be saved is worth the time spent, with help from family and friends.
Hope to see this some day, will enjoy the web sight again .Thanks!

MessageI, too, claim a descendancy to John Clement McDaniel, so I am fascinated by this account of his sister, whom I had not heard before. Thanks for this accounting. I had heard that Clement's Revolutionary War Jacket is on display at the Tenn. State Museum, but when I went there, I was told it was in storage at the time so I did not get to actually see it. ( I will call ahead and have them find it later).. Thanks again, this has been a good read.

MessageBobby,

Good talking to you today at the Polk St House, or what is now left of it. Looks like you guys did a lot of work to get that impressive wheel out of the riverbank and I am duly impressed with the whole endeavor. Great work, hopefully I will get up to Richmond and see the exhibit sometime. If you are ever driving around downtown again, stop by 1002 Wise Street, especially if it's a weekend. I will most likely be there for much of the coming year restoring the 1840's house.

Keep up the good work.

MessageDear Bobby,
Again, we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you and your family today at the Virginia Historical Society. smilie I know you are very proud of the work that you and your dad have done to find such an amazing (and enormous) piece of history. Thanks for your time today. Your personal narrative relayed your passion for our country's history as well as your family. Joey is a reflection of that passion. What a legacy you will leave! We are glad that you decided to donate the water wheel to VHS instead of the Smithsonian where it would be placed in a box in a back room somewhere. smilie
We wish you continued fun, awesome experiences and moments that take your breath away as you seek the treasures that unlock our past.
Sincerely,
Beth, Jerry and Grayson
